apidictor symphony one

First shown in 2017, Apidictor Symphony I is an outdoor installation following the flight path of the bumble bee. Giant nectar pods, made of honey-coloured fiberglass, are arranged along a three-dimensional flight path housing amplifiers, allowing the wanderer to listen to pollinator soundscapes. The collected and transmitted sounds relate to each other like movements of a symphony.

The series of giant bumble bee nectar pods house solar powered amplifiers and speakers. The translucent forms are inserted into multiple vertical rebar structures situated at the interstices of where the mowed pathways meet according to the bumble bee’s flight path pattern.  The dimensions of the installed nectar pods vary in height from 80 cm to 130 cm and 40 cm to 70 cm in diameter, whereas the combined maximum height of the pods and rebar sculptures are 3 meters.

Hegel and Margo’s proposal for an outdoor installation was accepted to Fieldworkwww.fieldworkproject.com, a vibrant and dynamic destination for the creation and experience of site-specific artwork in and around a field in eastern Ontario (Maberly, near Perth).  The meadow contained a mowed series of wide, crossing paths reproducing the complex pattern and scale of the bumble bee’s actual flight path. The size of the site was approximately 20 meters x 30 meters. Visitors walked the bumble bee’s flight path and listened to her pollinator conversations and song
